Install an HVAC and Keep Cool

The Australian summer can be super hot. If you live in Australia, you will want to make sure you can stay cool during the intense heat. I came to realise how important HVAC systems are when I moved into an apartment which didn't have HVAC. It was OK in the winter, but by the summer, it was terrible. I called in an HVAC contractor and asked them to install a new system. It was amazing what a difference it made. The contractor also gave me some advice about how to maintain the system. I hope this blog is useful to you.

Essential Maintenance Tips for Your Residential Air Conditioning System

Blog

Although Australia has many climate zones, it is generally deemed a hot country. Not surprisingly, many Australians use an air conditioner to keep their families cool and comfortable when temperatures begin to spike.

If you have an air conditioning system installed in your home, it pays to maintain it well. A well-maintained AC system will work reliably, safely and efficiently, providing a comfortable and healthy indoor environment without wasting energy and money.

While air conditioners vary greatly in terms of size and configuration, any residential air conditioning system can benefit from the following maintenance tips.

Filter cleaning/replacement

As hot, unconditioned air from your home's indoor environment gets pulled into your AC system, it passes through a filter. The filter catches airborne pollutants such as dust, dirt particles, pollen and pet dander, preventing them from entering your AC system.

AC filters are crucial for keeping your conditioned air clean and safe for inhalation. These filters inevitably become filthy with time, resulting in restricted airflow through your space cooling system.

Depending on the type of AC filter you have, you may or may not need to replace a dirty filter. If your AC unit has a single-use filter, replace it. If the filter is washable, clean it to use it again. Cleaning or replacing a dirty filter will facilitate an unobstructed flow of air, allowing your AC system to work well.

General AC cleaning

The filter isn't the only part of your air conditioning system that gets dirty. Your space-cooling system is made up of several components that should be kept clean to achieve optimal cooling output and efficiency. These include:

  • Blower fan
  • Condenser fan
  • AC coils
  • Cooling fins
  • Condensate drain pipe

These vital AC components accumulate dirt over time and should be cleaned as part of a general AC cleaning regimen.

Refrigerant testing and analysis

Refrigerant is an essential fluid that air conditioners use to maintain the refrigeration cycle. Because it flows through a closed-loop system, it should not escape.

That said, refrigerant lines can crack or break, resulting in refrigerant leaks. Since refrigerant is a colourless and odourless fluid, it may be difficult to know when it is leaking from your space-cooling system.

An effective way to keep track of your refrigerant level is to periodically conduct refrigerant tests and analyses. These will help locate leaks within your refrigerant lines and also determine how much refrigerant should be added after the leaks are sealed.

Taking proper care of your air conditioning system is essential for beating the summer heat in a reliable, safe and cost-efficient way. Contact an HVAC contractor if you need AC maintenance services for your home.
